What a bunch of a-holes.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 officially began filming this week and with it came an official cast list which can be read on Marvel’s website. The majority of the main cast is set to return, sans Benicio Del Toro as The Collector and Josh Brolin as the eventual Infinity War villain Thanos.
There were a few new additions to the cast however, including Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, and most notably, Kurt Russell. Director James Gunn has already confirmed that Klementieff will be playing the new guardian Mantis, but it is still unknown who the rest of the cast will be portraying.
There have been rumblings for a while now about Kurt Russell being a possible addition to the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 cast as Star Lord’s father and potential villain of the film. That seems to be looking more and more likely. Rumors are still swirling about who exactly Kurt Russell will be playing, with several different theories gaining notoriety.
Personally, I subscribe to the theory that Russell will be playing none other than the original Captain Marvel.
I mean it makes a lot of sense. Marvel already has announced that the Captain Marvel film will focus on Carol Danvers, the current and arguably most well known Captain Marvel. Making the original Captain Marvel become Star Lord’s dad lays down a lot of groundwork in establishing Danvers’s predecessor while at the same time explaining how Star Lord was able to hold on to the power stone for so long.
In the original Marvel comics Captain Marvel eventually was diagnosed with cancer and died, leaving a vacancy in the Captain Marvel mantel.Years later, there was story arc in one of the Guardians of the Galaxy comic runs in which Captain Marvel returns as the villain, from a parallel universe dubbed the Cancerverse, a universe in which the concept of death does not exist. In this story arc, Captain Marvel leads a legion of Lovecraftian monsters from the Cancerverse in an invasion upon the galaxy, and the Guardians are forced to repel this attack.
I’m not saying that Vol. 2 will be a direct adaptation of the Cancerverse story arc, but I feel a lot of the elements from that story may pop up in the final film. Kurt Russell is the perfect person to play Star Lord’s dad, as I can actually see a young Russell as Star Lord back in his prime. Russell also has the look of classic Captain Marvel, it would make sense in the context of Peter Quill’s abilities for him to be the son of Captain Marvel, and would go a long way in establishing the lore for the film Captain Marvel.
If Captain Marvel does end up being Peter Quill’s father, than having Captain Marvel be the antagonist of the film only makes sense. It would provide the central emotional conflict of the film, creating a real connection between the heroes and the antagonist. Marvel admittedly has had fairly weak villains in the majority of their films, having Peter Quill’s father be the main antagonist would be a good first step in rectifying that. And having one of their beloved superheroes take the role as the villain? Oh man, it’s almost too good of an opportunity for Marvel to pass up.
So, that’s my Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 theory! Agree? Disagree? Leave a comment below!
