We’re cancelling the apocalypse…again!
Deadline has just reported that Pacific Rim 2 has officially been green lit and will be directed by Spartacus and Daredevil creator Steven S. DeKnight in his feature film directorial debut. This news came as a surprise as it was thought that Pacific Rim 2 was stuck in development hell once it was indefinitely delayed. What comes as an even bigger surprise though is Guillermo Del Toro not returning to direct the sequel.
Pacific Rim was Del Toro’s baby and to see him not return for its sequel is a bit of a bummer. I loved what he did with the first one, and I was looking forward to where he took the franchise. But DeKnight is extremely talented, I consider the first season of Daredevil to be one of the best season’s of television of all time, so to see his take on a kaiju film could be really dope.
I thought Pacific Rim was really underrated and was disappointed to see its sequel be indefinitely delayed. This news that they’ve found a new director in DeKnight is exciting as it shows they are making some real progress on the film. I still would have preferred to see Del Toro return as everything he directs just oozes with style, but DeKnight is a damn fine replacement. With his experience working on Daredevil and Spartacus, both of which are lauded for the exceptional fight scenes, I’m really excited to see what he brings to the sequel. I can never have enough kaiju action.
