Is this a wound Fox would be willing to reopen?
There were a million things wrong with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but Liev Schreiber’s performance as Wolverine rival Sabertooth wasn’t one of them. Honestly he was one of the better parts of a film that has now been effectively erased from continuity due to X-Men: Days of Future Past. Ryan Reynolds got a second chance as Deadpool, so why not Liev Schreiber?
There have been rumors that he might appear in the untitled Wolverine sequel, which is allegedly be a loose adaptation of the popular comic story Old Man Logan. Bringing back one of Wolverine’s most famous rogues would make a lot of sense in the context of this story, and I would love to see Sabertooth done right in a film worthy of Schreiber’s performance.
When MTV asked Schreiber if there were any credence to the Sabertooth rumors, he confirmed that there have been talks:
We talked about it. I don’t know. He’s mentioned it to me. The Old Man Loganstory — that’s appealing. That’s something that I can do. Old, being the operative word.
Schreiber is just coming off a Best Picture win for Spotlight, so its not like he is in need of the work, but I would happily see him return. Patrick Stewart is reprising his role one last time as Professor X in Wolverine 3, as well as this being Hugh Jackman’s final appearance as the titular Wolverine. Here’s hoping we get a proper send off to Sabertooth as well.
The untitled Wolverine sequel releases March 3rd, 2017.
