Batfleck here we come.
Earlier today Warner Brothers made some slight adjustments to their slates of films. Wonder Woman has been pushed up a bit, and will instead be debuting alongside Bad Boys 3 on June 2, 2017. In this same announcement, Warner Brothers planting flags for two upcoming, untitled DC films for October 5, 2018 and November 1, 2019.
If I were a betting man (and I’m definitely not) I would say that Ben Affleck’s The Batman (oh how I hope that is the title) will take up that 2018 spot. Batman v Superman has been extremely critically divisive (to put it mildly) but the one thing that critics alike agree on is Ben Affleck’s titular portrayal as the Bat of Gotham. His portrayal has been critically lauded, and Batman is without a doubt DC’s most popular character, so frankly it’s just a matter of time until we get a solo Batman film.
With Batman v Superman under performing it’s makes sense that Warner Brothers would want to fast track a solo Batfleck film. Many fans (including myself) are incredibly excited about the notion of Ben Affleck not only starring in but also directing a Batman feature, and with the report that he has already written his own script I feel it’s inevitable that we will get the film sooner rather than later. Honestly, I’m surprised they haven’t delayed Justice League in a bit in favor of a solo Batman film to try and get their DCEU back on track, but it seems they are set on the current Justice League release date.
As for what the other untitled film is? Your guess is as good as mine. Once again, if I had to place a bet I would say it’s a sequel to this year’s Suicide Squad. There is a lot of positive buzz about the film at this moment, and with the news that WB is already planning a sequel to the unreleased film, it seems that the dates would just match up. As for whether or not that’s a good idea? Well, we’ll just all have to wait to see the movie to find that out.
I hope it’s good. If not we always have BATMAN.
