If it bleeds, we can kill it.
We’ve known that director Shane Black has been working on his own Predator film since last month. Outside of that, details have been scarce until recently when Black spoke briefly with Collider on his plans for the sci-fi franchise. This is what he had to say on if Arnold Schwarzenegger return, and when exactly the film will be set:
We have not talked about it, which is good because I’m not supposed to talk about it anyway. Not supposed to talk about details of the script. And I shouldn’t…I think it’s something we’re looking into, and as this thing evolves and takes on more of a shape, we’ll figure out how best to honor the tradition of what is really a remarkable first movie and even parts of the rest of them as well…This one will be set in present day.
So, there you have it. The newest Predator film will be set in present day, and while it’s unknown if Schwarzenegger will return, it looks unlikely.
I’m interested to see Black’s take on the Predator franchise. For a long time now he has been the king of buddy cop movies, penning many scripts for the Lethal Weapon franchise, as well as writing and directing Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3, and the upcoming The Nice Guys (which looks fantastic). Not only that, he even had a part in the original Predator!
Black has always excelled in dark humor, and I think that will lend itself well to the Predator franchise. It’s been dead for quite some time now (discounting the abysmal Aliens vs. Predator franchise) and I think Black is the right person to resurrect it. At the very least the film will have some amazing dialogue and humor and be more fun to watch than any other Predator movie since 1987.
The Predator is slated for release March 2nd, 2018.
