And here I am still waiting on the first one.

When you think about it, Avatar is quite the oddity. It’s the highest grossing movie of ALL TIME, yet no one really cares about it. I mean, most people enjoyed it well enough when it came out (I know I did) but outside of its visual effects, the film is nothing groundbreaking. Even then however, it’s left little to no impact on popular culture, like say the MCU or Star Wars has. Or hell, even Transformers, no matter what impact that may be.

It’s been known for a while now that director James Cameron has been working on sequels to Avatar. That comes as no surprise to anyone, it is the highest grossing movie of all time of course. Yet when we will actually see those is a little murky.

Initially, Cameron announced two sequels to the blockbuster film, slated for December 2014 and December 2015. Well, those dates came and past and with it, more delays and more Avatar sequels announced. We are now up to four planned Avatar sequels, and they feel just as far away as they did when the first film came out. It’s become something of a running joke at this point. By the time a sequel comes out, I’m not sure if anyone will care any more, if anyone still does.

The new planned dates release dates:  Avatar 2 is due Christmas 2018, Avatar 3 is due Christmas 2020, Avatar 4 is due Christmas 2022, and Avatar 5 is due Christmas 2023.

I know I’m kind of ragging on Cameron and Avatar, but it’s getting a little ridiculous at this point. I halfway believe we will never actually see a sequel to Avatar, and that they’ll just keep getting pushed back farther and farther with more and more sequels added until the end of time.

With that being said, if and when these films do happen, I have a feeling they will exceed expectations. James Cameron is the king of sequels (Aliens and Terminator 2) and Avatar is his baby. He had to set up all of the lore and universe in the first film, but now that that’s out of the way, he can go nuts in the universe he’s created. While I’m not sure I’ll live to see the film in my life time, I have a feeling it will be worth the wait.
