It was only a matter of time.
There have been rumors for a while now that The Punisher was going to get his own Netflix show, alongside Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and the upcoming Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. The Punisher is definitely a fan favorite, and after the stellar portrayal of the character by Jon Bernthal in Daredevil Season 2, many felt it was inevitable. And it would appear that it was.
Reported by EW, Netflix has officially ordered a show for the character. Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) will serve as the showrunner, with Bernthal predictably set to return.
I have to admit, I was ecstatic when I read this news. I always liked the Punisher as a character, but he was never one of my favorites. That was until I saw Bernthal’s interpretation in season 2 of Daredevil. He brought a lot to the role, and The Punisher ended up being one of my favorite aspects of the sophomore season.
While it’s unclear when the show will be released, as the Marvel/Netflix slate is pretty stacked as it is with Luke Cage set to debut later this year, Iron Fist and The Defenders coming up next year, as well as the announced second season of Jessica Jones, and the inevitable third season of Daredevil. After writing it all out, it just shows how successful the television side of the MCU has been.
I’m excited about this news, and look forward to seeing the Netflix part of Marvel to continue to expand. Check out the teaser just released for the announcement of the show:
