Warner Brothers, let them fight.
If you were looking forward to Godzilla facing off against Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah facing off against the king of the monsters in 2018 then prepared to be disappointed. Warner Brothers has shuffled around a few of their release dates, and the old Godzilla 2 release date was one of the casualties.
Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla 2 has been pushed back to release on March 22nd, 2019. That’s nine months later than its original release date of June 8, 2018. That’ll be about four years between Godzilla films. I liked the original Godzilla reboot well enough, and was looking forward to a sequel, but nine years is ridiculous. I’m not sure if it’ll be worth the wait.
In other news, in that same announcement we also finally got a release date for Godzilla vs. King Kong: May 29th, 2020.
Warner Brothers kicked off their Kaijuverse with 2014’s Godzilla reboot, and will receive its second entry with Kong: Skull Island next year. As far as cinematic universes go, besides the Marvel/DC/Star Wars universes, this one annoys me the least. It’s one of the few that doesn’t feel forced – a la Hasbro cinematic universe, Universal Monsters cinematic universe, or the god damn Hanna-Barbera cinematic universe – so I hope to see this one succeed. We’ll just have to wait a while.
