It looks like Marvel is adding yet another Oscar winner to their universe.

According to Variety, Oscar winning actress Brie Larson is circling to play the titular role of Captain Marvel. While she still hasn’t signed on, Larson reportedly wants the role, and is Marvel’s first choice. The film has yet to attach a director, but contenders are Niki Caro (Whale Rider) and Jennifer Kent (The Babadook).

It’s been rumored for as long as the film has been confirmed that Emily Blunt would take up the mantle of Captain Marvel, but it seems that is no longer the case. Personally, I’m happy about this. I was never sold on Blunt as Captain Marvel even though she’s a fantastic actress. Larson is quite an inspired casting choice, and one that I am 100% behind.

Larson is a real talent, and while she has yet to star in a big budget blockbuster film, she has helmed numerous indie projects, one of which she won best actress for (Room). It won’t be her first comic role either, as she had a small role in a personal favorite of mine, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Apparently Marvel wants to cast Captain Marvel before choosing a director, as they would like to introduce her in a film prior to her solo. Methinks she will pop up in The Movie Formerly Known as Avengers: Infinity War Part 1, but your guess is as good as mine.

As for the directors, holy hell am I hoping for Kent. The Babadook is one of the best horror films to come out in years, in no small part to Kent’s fantastic directing. Marvel has always liked to think outside the box for their directors (the Russos were known for sitcoms, Gunn was known for smaller cult film, and Whedon was mainly a TV guy before The Avengers), and Kent would fit perfectly among that list. Here’s hoping.

Captain Marvel is slated for release July 6th, 2018.
