No, it’s not his laughing stock of a reputation.
While we’ve already gotten a glimpse of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman in his needless cameo in Batman v Superman, and his appearance in the teaser trailer for Justice League, it won’t be a few years until we’ll get to see him in his full length solo appearance. But at the very least, we now know who he’ll be squaring off against.
If it wasn’t obvious by this article’s header picture, it’s Black Manta, arguably Aquaman’s most famous villain. This news is coming to us from The Wrap. While no more details are available about the character’s upcoming appearance, there were rumors that Common was playing the iconic villain in the recently released Suicide Squad, although that obviously didn’t pan out.
Black Manta is a pretty fun villain, and seems like a safe choice by DC Films for the villain. Not that that’s a bad thing though, I think Black Manta was pretty high up on most people’s list as the villain they’d want to see a live action Aquaman face off against. While I’m finding it harder and harder to get excited about anything coming out of DC Films lately, I consider this to be good news.
Jason Momoa is set to return next year as Aquaman in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, along with fellow Atlanteans Mera (Amber Heard) and Vulko (Willem Dafoe). The film will be written by Will Beal, based off a draft by Geoff Johns and Aquaman director James Wan (The Conjuring, Furious 7). The film is set to hit theaters on July 27th, 2018.
