Don’t mock the Shocker!

Spoilers for Spider-Man: Homecoming below.

There have been rumors that Spider-Man: Homecoming would have a third villain in addition to the two already announced in the Vulture and the Tinkerer. Well, Marvel’s most poorly kept secret is hardly a secret anymore, as leaked set photos have given us our first look at the classic Spidey villain: The Shocker!

Take it away Twitter:

Well, he looks terrible. And that’s great! Shocker is a sort of running joke in Spider-Man comics, with his usual ineptitude at being a super villain and shockingly* poor taste in attire. His costume looks  poorly put together, which fits the Shocker’s persona pretty perfectly. While the costume is not a direct adaptation of Shocker’s comic costume, it’s a pretty faithful re-imagination. Shocker looks absolutely ridiculous in the comics, I mean he looks like he’s wearing a mattress for god’s sake.

With that being said, his costume has remained fairly static* throughout the decades, so I’m pretty happy that they are paying homage to it. Hell, they may have even improved the design by making it look even worse than before, as it emphasizes the fact that Shocker is an almost joke of a villain. But a joke that I love.

My bet’s on Shocker being a first act, even cold-open type villain for the film, a la Batroc in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, or Crossbones in Captain America: Civil War. I’d be shocked* if he ends up playing a substantial role in the film, but that’s merely speculation on my part.

What do you guys think of the Shocker’s look? Love it? Hate it? Sound off in the comments below!

* I apologize for all of the Shocker puns.
