Well, this is unexpected. According to Deadline Guy Ritchie, director of Snatch and Lock and Stock, has just signed on to direct the live-action adaptation of Disney’s Aladdin. The film has been written by Big Fish’s John August, and will be produced by The Lego Movie’s Dan Lin. Pretty talented team they have right there.
I don’t think anyone saw a pairing like this coming, and to be honest I’m not quite sure how this will work. Still, I’m interested. Disney has already knocked it out of the park with their live-action Jungle Book, as well as their Pete’s Dragon remake. They’ve already signed on Jon Favreau to direct another live-action Disney jungle movie, The Lion King, and have green-lit a live-action Mulan. Plus, there is this little film coming out next year titled Beauty and the Beast.
So yeah, Disney is moving full speed ahead with their live-action remakes, and I’m right on board with them. Jungle Book was good, Beauty and the Beast looks great, so I have no doubt in my mind that Ritchie’s Aladdin will be a success as well, even if I can’t quite imagine what the final product will turn out like. But I’m also wrong all the time so who knows. I’m just some guy who spends too much time on the internet.
There are no details yet on when this film will actually happen, but we’ll keep you updated when they become available.
