In an interview with Complex UK, Avengers and Serenity director Joss Whedon came straight out and said he wanted to make a Star Wars film. The quote can be read below:
I mean, it’s a fun thing to do, to put yourself in the service of something if you think you can add an interpretation. It’s no different than any other storytelling. There are some times when you get micro-managed to death but with Marvel, they let me make two movies that were very much mine. So do I want to make James Bond movie? Yeah. Anne Hathaway does Catwoman again? Sure, I’m in. Do I want to make a Star Wars movie? Yeah. I was like, “I don’t want to make a Star Wars movie. Like, god dammit, why?” But I saw the trailer for Rogue awhile ago and I was like, “I want to do that.” To make a Star Wars movie and not be wed to the bigger picture.
I am so in. This quote is interesting because Whedon has already gone on the record rejecting the prospects of making a Star Wars film. The fact that the Rogue One trailer is what caused him to change his tune, to me, points towards him wanting to make an anthology film.
Which makes sense. Whedon allegedly parted ways with Marvel after making two extremely successful Avengers films due to the exhaustion of working wihtin the studio system. That pretty much would rule him out of ever directing one of the saga films (especially with the directors already lined up for the next couple of entries), but a spin-off film could give Whedon a lot of room to breathe and flex his creative muscles.
Whedon’s talents and sensibilities as a writer and director would feel right at home within a Star Wars film. The question is, what would he make? I could see him doing well with a quippy Han Solo film, but that is already sort of happening. Maybe the inevitable Boba Fett film? Or maybe an ensemble picture, which is more within his wheelhouse. But, I’m merely speculating.
Either way, this news is exciting. I love the idea of Whedon making a Star Wars film, and I profusely hope it happens.
What do you guys think? Do you want to see a Whedon-led Star Wars film? If so, what kind of movie would you like to see? Sound off in the comments below.
