This is the greatest timeline.
Alright, I’m officially on board with this movie.
We heard whispers a few months ago that Atlanta’s Donald Glover was the front runner to play the charming and swashbuckling Lando Calrissian in Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s (21 and 22 Jump Street) upcoming Han Solo Star Wars film. Well, they ain’t whispers anymore. Thanks to a press release from Lucasfilm, we’ve learned that Glover has officially signed on to play the famed slippery smuggler.
Lucasfilm announced today that Donald Glover, an acclaimed actor, award-winning writer, and Grammy-nominated artist, will be playing the part of Lando Calrissian in the still-untitled Han SoloStar Wars film, helmed by directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Glover will join Alden Ehrenreich — previously cast as Han Solo — in bringing two iconic Star Wars characters back to the big screen, but at a time in their lives previously unexplored. This new film depicts Lando in his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld — years before the events involving Han, Leia, and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and his rise to Rebel hero in Return of the Jedi.
“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us,” said Lord and Miller. “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”
Lucasfilm is doing an amazing job at convincing me that this inherently bad idea is a great one. Donald Glover is the perfect choice to play a young Lando. He’s got the both the comedic and dramatic chops needed for a role like this, easily embodying the previous cape-draped swagger of Billy Dee Williams.
He will star opposite new Han Solo Alden Ehrenreich, who made waves with his fantastic performance in Hail, Caesar! With Tessa Thompson rumored to be joining the film, this cast just keeps getting more and more stacked. With Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens) penning the script, and Lord and Miller directing, I think it’s safe to say that we’re in for another knockout Star Wars movie.
The untitled Han Solo movie is set for release in 2018. Mark your calendars folks.
