Yesterday we learned that Krampus and Trick r Treat scribe and director Michael Dougherty would reteam with Zach Shields to pen the script for the upcoming Godzilla sequel. Well, it turns out Dougherty is doing a little more than just writing the film.
That’s right boys and girls, Michael Dougherty has just signed on to direct Legendary’s Godzilla 2. Dougherty will be replacing original Godzilla director Gareth Edwards in helming the kaiju-sized sequel. Edwards was originally signed on to direct Godzilla 2 but exited the project a few months ago seemingly due to the exhaustion of directing back-to-back blockbusters, moving from Godzilla to Rogue One.
I’m into it.
I think it’s safe to say that Godzilla 2 will be an exceedingly different film from its predecessor. For those unfortunate few of you who haven’t had the chance to check out Dougherty’s previous genre film efforts Krampus and Trick r’ Treat, you’re doing yourselves a massive disservice.
Dougherty is a great director, one who is able to mix together fun, macabre humor, horror, and genuine nostalgia in a recognizably unique way. I have no idea a what Dougherty lead Godzilla film will be like, and that’s what is so damn exciting about this.
What do you guys think? Are you excited by a Michael Dougherty helmed Godzilla flick? Sound off in the comments below.
