You read that right. According to The Hollywood Reporter, white makeup enthusiast Johnny Depp has joined the cast of the sequel to the Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Who exactly he is playing remains unknown, maybe he is one of the fantastic beasts they are looking for (note: I know next to nothing about Harry Potter).
Mild spoilers follow.
We won’t just see Depp in that sequel, however. Here’s what THR had to say about where we can expect Depp to pop up in this spin-off franchise:
“Depp will be making a cameo in Fantastic Beasts, but his character is being kept under wraps so audiences will have to keep an eye out.”
Now I am no Harry Potter fan by any means, so I have no idea whether or not to get excited about this. Johnny Depp has put out some fantastic (ha) performances in his career, but lately he has been on a bit of a cold streak. Plus there is the whole domestic abuse thing. In my humble, uninformed Harry Potter opinion, this seems like a mistake. Depp has proved to not be the box office draw he was once was, and his appearances in fantasy films especially are more distracting than anything.
But hey, maybe I’m wrong. Maybe some of you Harry Potter enthusiasts can tell me how he is the perfect fit for whatever mystery character he is playing. Apparently they are planning on making five of these things. Maybe I should brush up on my Harry Potter knowledge…
Anyway, we’ll be able to check out Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them November 18th, and I guess we’ll see how Depp turns out. Fingers crossed.
