Reminder: Rian Johnson is making a Star Wars movie.
The fine people at Making Star Wars got their hands on some interesting details about all the lovely new people we’ll meet in Star Wars: Episode VIII. Now, if you’re particularly sensitive to spoilers, you might want to get out of this article while you still can. Although, if you cared about that sort of thing then I don’t know why you clicked on the article in the first place. For shame.
Anyway, let’s get into it.
First up is Benicio Del Toro’s character. Apparently, his character plays into the classic “man in black” rogue archetype, literally and figuratively. His character dresses in all black and it’s unknown whether he is considered a hero or a villain. He’ll probably find himself somewhere in the middle, maybe similar to the role Lando played in Empire? I think this all pretty much what we were expecting from a Del Toro Star Wars character, although part of me is disappointed he won’t be playing the role of a bounty hunter or Sith lord. His character reportedly plays a role in the alleged “casino set,” which sounds pretty freaking awesome to me. Good stuff.
Second is Laura Dern’s character. She’s described as being “very aristocratic and fancy” with elaborate costuming and pink hair-styling. Immediately my mind jumps to the stylings Queen Amidala back on Naboo, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Apparently, she is the “most bombastic” of our new batch of characters, which I’m definitely into. I can’t wait to see Dern go big.
Lastly, we have Kelly Marie Tran’s character, which Making Star Wars is playing close to the chest. Her her character’s story is allegedly tied up with Finn’s somehow, and it’s rumored that she may be a love interest of sorts for our favorite reformed stormtrooper. She’s described as being “very normal looking but her situation is supposedly really cool”, which isn’t much to off of, but hey, it’s info about Episode VIII!
While it isn’t a ton of new info, it’s still intriguing nonetheless. I’m most interested in learning more about Del Toro’s character because it’s god damned Benicio Del Toro in a god damned space casino in a god damned Rian Johnson Star Wars movie. Who doesn’t want to know more about that?
God damn this going to be awesome. We’re getting closer folks.
