Remember the vital and important role that Luke Skywalker played in The Force Awakens? Me neither. Well, Episode VIII director Rian Johnson is aiming to change that, as he finally lets loose a few details on Luke’s role moving forward, as well as teasing his relationship with Rey.

How Rey and Luke relate to each other is the key relationship in Episode VIII, and Johnson says “a large part of the movie” will be spent addressing why Luke’s there and what he’ll do next. Like Luke, Rey has been pulled into a bigger world by connecting with the Force, “but part of what’s she’s dealing with is the realization that she has this power and this gift,” Johnson adds. “She’s taking her first step to coming to terms with this thing inside her that she never knew was there and is just starting to reveal its potential.”
Glad to see Luke Skywalker will have a larger role going forward, as he’ll take on a Yoda-esque role in training Rey. With an expanded role, here’s hoping he has a scene on par with the Vader carnage is Rogue One.
The most interesting bit to come out of this is that Johnson considers the relationship between Luke and Rey to be the key relationship of the film. I wonder if this strengthens the baby daddy Luke theory?
Nevertheless, this all sounds good, if a bit expected. I’m just glad we’re finally getting more info on Episode VIII. We’re less than a year away guys, maybe we’ll get a title soon? Maybe even a trailer?
Star Wars: Episode VIII his theaters December 15, 2017, but you already knew that, didn’t you?
