The cast of Pacific Rim: Uprising (ugh, I will always bemoan the name change from Pacific Rim: Maelstrom) has been known for a while now. Charlie Hunnam’s bland dude out, John Boyega’s as the bad ass son of Idris Elba’s Stacker in, with Scott Eastwood and Cailee Spaeny joining him.

“But what about all the other cool people we met in Pacific Rim? Are they coming back?” You may ask. And if this Instagram picture from cinematographer Dan Mindel is anything to go by, we’ll soon be reunited with some of our old pals. Namely: Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day*:

Over to the left of the image is a chart with actor and characters names. At the bottom, you’ll find Kikuchi’s name. I’m glad we finally have confirmation that Mako is going to be in the film, as Kikuchi was easily the standout among the cast, and Mako the most compelling character.

In the middle of the chart, you’ll see Charlie Day and Burn Gorman returning as the pair of wacky scientists is also a pleasent surprise. Rumor has it that the original plan for the sequel placed Day in a central role, with him kicking off the entire plot by mind-melding with the Kaiju and becoming something of a villain, but who knows if that is still the plan. Personally, I hope it is, because who doesn’t want to see Charlie Kelly, King of the Kaiju?

Another interesting tidbit is the fact that Karl Urban is on this cast list. As far as I’m aware, this is the first we’ve heard of Urban having anything to do with Pacific Rim! I’m into it though, more Karl Urban is always a good thing.

And there you have it! Your latest update on Pacific Rim: Uprising. My already high expectations have gone through the roof with these latest cast announcements, and the wait until it hits theaters on February 23, 2018, just got that much harder. Now just change the name back to

Now just change the name back to Maelstrom!

*UPDATE: It appears the image with the cast list has been removed from Dan Mindel’s Instagram. Make of that what you will.
