Remember Avatar? The highest-grossing film of all time? With the blue cat people? Well, if not, James Cameron is determined to make you remember. “How?” you may ask. Well, with four sequels, filmed back-to-back. It appears Cameron is dedicating the rest of his life to the world of Avatar, and damn it, no one does what James Cameron does, besides James Cameron.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, Cameron confirmed that he finally completed the scripts for the four films and that production will begin within the year. As the hip young kids say these days, it’s lit, fam.

Here’s the relevant info from the interview:

The thing is, my focus isn’t on Avatar 2. My focus is on Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5 equally. That’s exactly how I’m approaching it. They’ve all been developed equally. I’ve just finished the script to Avatar 5.

I’m now starting the process of active prep. I’ll be working with the actors in the capture volume in August, so I’m booked in production every day between now and then. Our volume is up and running, and everything is designed, and so we’re going full-guns right now. I feel like I’ve been let out of jail, because I’ve been in the writing cave for the last two years. I’m actually enjoying life. I don’t enjoy writing. I wouldn’t wish writing on a dog.

While I enjoy Avatar, I’ll admit, I’m not too excited about returning to the universe. Hell, I’ve forgotten just almost everything about it. It has been eight years since the release of the first film. But god damn, Cameron’s enthusiasm and dedication to this project is quite infectious, and I’m dying to see what he has up his sleeve that he’s going to require FOUR sequels. And as we’ve all learned by now, nobody does sequels as well as James Cameron.

Avatar 2 is currently slated for release in December 2018, but who know’s if that date is still relevant. It isn’t like the release dates for this franchise have mattered in the past. Still, with the script finished and production set to begin soon, we may just be returning to Pandora within the next two years.

How do you guys feel about four Avatar sequels? Excited? Curious? Don’t care? Let me know in the comments below.
