Last night, a report from Variety writer Justin Kroll surfaced stating that it was unlikely that Matt Reeves would begin work on The Batman until 2018, due to his focus on War For The Planet of the Apes. Following that news, Slashfilm dropped another bombshell: Ben Affleck’s Batman is being completely rewritten.
We can now report that there is more going behind-the-scenes as well. According to sources close to the production, the screenplay for The Batman is being rewritten from the ground up, so it’s entirely possible that everything we’ve heard about the film’s story will no longer be in play.
There are a couple of ways to take this. On one hand, it makes sense. With a new director comes a new vision for the film. Maybe Matt Reeves vision didn’t line up with the current iteration of Affleck’s script?
On the other hand, 6 months ago we were all looking forward to a Batman movie, written by, directed by, and starring Ben Affleck. Now Affleck’s not directing, and his script has been thrown out with no indication of him working on the rewrite. Maybe this is Affleck’s way of slowing phasing himself out? At this point, news of Affleck exiting the picture completely would not surprise me.
I guess we can forget about everything we previously knew about The Batman. Who knows if it’ll even still be called that. Here’s hoping that this seemingly never-ending game of musical chairs of directors and writers eventually leads to a good movie, but I’m not holding my breath.
