In an interview with Complex, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 director James Gunn confirmed that a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is indeed a reality. I guess they don’t all die horrifically in either Vol.2 or Infinity War. Although, I’m pretty sure we already knew that. Nevertheless, it’s nice to hear.

Here are the relevant bits:

“There will be a Guardians 3, that’s for sure. We’re trying to figure it out. I’m trying to figure out what I want to do really, that’s all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I’m just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.”

While Gunn does confirm that Vol. 3 is definitely happening, he does not confirm whether not he’ll direct it. It’s definitely in the cards, but from the sound of it, he could go either way. I, like many others, desperately hopes he returns. The original Guardians of the Galaxy remains one of the best films of the entire MCU saga, and Vol. 2 looks to be shaping up quite nicely. Gunn’s unique voice would be missed if someone else were to take the reins of the franchise.

If Gunn returns, he’ll become the first director in the MCU to direct an entire trilogy of his own, which would be pretty cool. The fact that we already have multiple trilogies in the MCU alone is frankly mind-boggling. Oh how far it’s come.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5th. Here’s a question for you guys, if Gunn ends up not coming back, who would you like to see direct the third Guardians installment? Let me know in the comments below.
