After about a week of teasing and hype, the first trailer for IT is finally here, and it’s, well, why don’t you take a look for yourself:
My personal take? A resounding “meh”.
Whereas the original IT novel (and to a much lesser extent, the first live action adaptation) has a lingering sense of dread uneasiness that permeates throughout the whole story, this trailer dials the notch all the way up eleven. It looks like it’s abandoning any semblance of subtlety and is delivering on the eXXXTREME version of IT.
Everything about IT looks so over the top and overblown. Pennywise looks so cartoonishly evil that it’s hard to even take him seriously. The shot of him frantically emerging from the water actually made me laugh at how ridiculous it looked. The film might have some decent scares in it, sure, but I’m not sure if it’ll have more than that. I could be totally wrong about this of course, but this trailer doesn’t have me feeling too confident about this thing.
Although, I’ll never get tired of that goddamn terrible sewer picture. It’s just too good not to use.
IT hits theaters September 8
