Sony, I was this close to completely writing off the Venom movie, and then you go off and do something like this
According to an exclusive report from Variety, Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road) has officially signed on to star as the titular Venom in the Spider-Man spin-off, which has nothing to do with Spider-Man.
Tom Hardy is a self-proclaimed “huge fan of Venom” and posted this picture to commemorate the announcement:
Variety went on to report that Venom is being helmed by director Ruben Fleischer of Zombieland fame, and written by Jeff Pinker (The Dark Tower) and Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji). Note, before you get too excited about Rosenberg, remember that he’s also responsible for Kangaroo Jack. Make of that what you will.
With a star, a director, and a writer, it looks like this Venom thing may actually be happening. I still kind of hate the idea of a Venom film that isn’t connected to Spider-Man in any way whatsoever, but the casting of Tom Hardy is a great start to getting this writer on board. He fits the physicality of the character perfectly, and he’s already turned in a few great villainous comic book performance in The Dark Knight Rises. Who knows what silly voice Hardy will come up with for this role?
Venom is currently slated to hit theaters October 5th, 2018. Here’s hoping they decide to connect it to the MCU by then so we can get some Tom (Hardy) on Tom (Holland) action.
How are you guys feeling about this announcement?
