Uh, this is unexpected.
Sony is making an Uncharted movie. I know this is easy to forget, as Sony has been trying to turn their blockbuster video game franchise into a blockbuster movie franchise since, well, its inception (at one point it was going to be a David O. Russell joint). But the latest Shaun levy helmed iteration of Uncharted appears to have finally gained some traction.
According to Deadline, Spider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland has been cast to play Nathan Drake. Fans of the franchise may find this odd, as Nathan Drake has always been a mid-to-late 30s cynical jackass, and Holland is but a wee boy. But, there’s a reason for that.
For those of you who have played Uncharted 3, you’ll recall a section in which the game flashes back to a much younger Drake, detailing his first meeting with his mentor/father figure Sully. Well, apparently the movie is going to focus on that Nathan Drake, and serve as a prequel to the video game series.
Honestly, as a fan of the franchise, I think this is a pretty smart idea. Simply retelling the stories of the video games in movie format would be fairly pointless. Uncharted’s presentation is already eerily close to that of generic summer blockbusters. A straight adaptation would feel like a complete watered down version of things. Making the film a prequel allows the filmmakers to tell a fresh story with the characters we already love. If they feel so inclined, they can always adapt the games afterward. In terms of an Uncharted adaptation, I feel this is the best route to take.
As far as the casting of Holland himself? I’m into it. He knocked all of our socks off in his short yet effective role as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. The dude’s proven he has acting chops. I can see him pulling off a quick-witted young Nathan Drake quite well. Certainly better than Mark Wahlberg, the guy originally playing Drake in the O. Russel version.
I’m still doubting that this film will ever happen, but if it does, I’m into how Sony is approaching it. What about you guys? How do you feel about the Uncharted movie serving as a prequel to the games? Let me know in the comments below.
