What the actual fuck?
Yeah, you read that headline right. According to Deadline, Martin Scorsese is producing a Joker origin story directed by The Hangover’s Todd Phillips. I’m a bit taken aback at the moment, so I’ll let Deadline do some of the heavy-lifting:
“Warner Bros and DC are in the early stages of another Batman Universe spinoff movie, this one telling the origin story of the signature villain The Joker. The studio has set The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips to co-write a script with 8 Mile scribe Scott Silver. Phillips will direct the movie, and Martin Scorsese will produce it with Phillips.”
“The intention is to make a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy.”
I don’t I’m alone when I say this: what the actual fuck? There’s a lot of news to process here. One: Warner Bros. is making a fucking Joker origin movie. Two: Martin Scorsese is producing a fucking Joker origin movie. Three: the director of The Hangover is helming a fucking Joker origin movie.
To me, this just seems like a bad idea from top to bottom. For one thing, it seems like Warner Bros. can’t go one month without announcing another ill-conceived DC movie. There doesn’t seem to be any real plan for their cinematic universe. It’s more like they are just throwing copious amounts of shit at the wall to see what sticks.
How the hell did they wrangle Martin Scorsese into this of all people? Todd Phillips I get, but Scorsese? One has to wonder just how big of an impact he’ll have on this project. Methinks little to none. This feels like it’s for marketing sake, similar to paying Steven Spielberg to be a producer for Transformers.
As to the idea itself? Meh. I’m not at all interested in a Joker origin film. The Joker is a character who doesn’t need that story told. The closest we have to an official origin story for the character is The Killing Joke, and I don’t see Warner Bros. topping that.
The one good piece of news to come out of this is that it may not be in the DCEU. According to Deadline, this movie “isn’t part of any other iteration” of the Joker. In simpler terms, no Jared Leto in this thing. Now, I’m normally not religious, but thank God for that. Who knows, maybe we’ll get a decent Joker out of this thing to pit against Batfleck.
There’s a lot to digest here. What do you guys think? Do any of you actually want a Joker origin film? Let me know in the comments below.
